The Sesquicentennial of the

Burning of Haymarket

One hundred and fifty years ago, on November 4th, 1862, the town of Haymarket was set ablaze. Homes and livelihoods were destroyed. A young life was lost.

You are invited to mark this event as we keep special hours, opening our doors from 5:00PM-7:00PM on the 4th. The museum shall be lit by candle glow, the bell rung in commemoration and in honor of the citizens who began anew.

Copies of the Transcript of Kurd Baron Veltheim's Court Martial will be available to our visitors.  Burning of the Town

Haymarket Museum 2009

Haymarket is partnering with Prince William County and the Common-wealth of Virginia to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.

The Haymarket Museum is located in historic Haymarket, Virginia, a small town in western Prince William County that was founded in 1799.

Located in the old Town Hall, the museum was originally constructed in 1883 as a schoolhouse.

This website is a work-in-progress. As research is completed, and we obtain additional photos and information, we will continue to update the site.

Please visit us often! We hope that if you have memories of living in or near the town, this site will inspire you to contact us in order to share your memories and help document both the town and the greater Haymarket area.

Civil War 150th Anniversary Seal

There are two Civil War Trails signs located to the east of the Museum describing the 1862 burning of the town and the 1863 Battle of Haymarket.

Caboose 2009

The Southern Railway Caboose is located to the west of the Museum and is open every September during the annual Haymarket Day Festival.
